These extraordinary times require bookshops to operate in a remarkably different way.
Life in a time of Covid is forcing shops to reinvent the way they sell books and many are having surprising success at doing this.

January has been all about getting the changes held back over Christmas out to prod. There have been a lot of bug fixes but also optimisations, improvements and new features moved to beta.
January’s best seller was Dr Michael Mosley’s ‘The Fast 800: How to Combine Rapid Weight Loss and Intermittent Fasting for Long-Term Health’, which sold 1225 copies last month. Scott Pape’s ‘The Barefoot Investor’ remains in the top 3, selling 1050 copies. ‘Normal People’ by Irish author Sally Rooney is the third best seller, with 992 copies sold.
‘Ottolenghi Simple’ by Yotam Ottolenghi was the best selling book in December, it sold 2841 copies. Michelle Obama’s memoir ‘Becoming: Michelle Obama’ followed closely with 2788 copies sold, and ‘The Lost Man’ by Jane Harper came in third, selling 2221 copies.
In December we focussed on stability and speed, avoiding making any changes that did not directly improve this. The stability of the server over Christmas was as a result of this, so we have decided to devote a developer to this full time.
The second novel in Jessica Townsend’s Nevermoor series ‘Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow’ is November’s best seller, with 1566 copies sold. Best selling author Jane Harper returns with ‘The Lost Man’, which sold 1460 copies last month. She is closely followed by Jeff Kinney’s latest instalment of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, ‘The Meltdown (#13)’, with 1449 sales.
